This course introduces students to the theory and practice of liturgical chant. The theoretical half of the course surveys the repertoire of chant, its historical development to the present, and approaches to modern performance. The practical half then applies this background in actual sung performance and familiarizes students with chants they will most likely encounter in parish settings beginning with simple recitation through more florid chants of the Mass. The schola will perform at school liturgies on several occasions throughout the semester.
