“Let the faithful consider to what a high dignity they are raised by the sacrament of baptism” (Pius XII, Mediator Dei). This course aims to raise participants’ consciousness of baptismal dignity by examining the history, practice, and theology of the sacraments of initiation. We will study Christian initiation in multiple cultural and historical contexts, paying attention to the unity and the distinctiveness of baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist. We will give particular attention to the present Roman Catholic Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, Rite of Baptism for Children, and Rite of Confirmation. Since one baptism into one Lord and one faith is the foundation of ecumenical dialogue among Christians, we will also cultivate an appreciation for theological unity in a variety of initiatory practices.
